In mid-June, the Michigan House of Representatives passed a K-12 education budget for Fiscal Year 2026. This budget includes nearly $41 million for non-public schools to support students in the following ways:
- Mental health support and school safety
- Universal breakfast and lunch
- Student teacher stipends
- Robotics programs and competitions, including Science Olympiad
- Literacy professional development
Neither the Governor’s Executive Budget Recommendation nor the state Senate’s FY ’26 K-12 education budget included funding for nonpublic schools, and budget negotiations are now at an impasse.
Regardless of the type of school, all students benefit from essential support services that include safe and secure buildings, access to healthy meals and mental health assistance, and learning from quality teachers.
Nonpublic schools educate more than 100,000 Michigan children and Michigan lawmakers should support all students in all schools – including nonpublic – when it comes to funding these universal support services.
Follow the prompts below to send a message to your elected officials to urge their support of a state budget that helps all students.
