The Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Francis died at 7:35 a.m. CEST on Monday, April 21, 2025. The 88-year-old Pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on Feb. 14 after suffering from a bout of bronchitis and a complicated infection. He experienced several brushes with death while in the hospital and was finally released in late March. Pope Francis had been recovering at home, but continued working and making surprise appearances to the faithful, including his final visit on Easter morning.

Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, confirmed that the Pope died after suffering a stroke, which led to a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.
