General Introduction: The Bishop of Grand Rapids is the visible head and source of unity in the particular Church entrusted to his pastoral care (CCC 1594). In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ’s mission present and enduring while functioning in his role as Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Bishop trusts chosen collaborators (clerics, religious and lay people) to share in the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Each employee helps to extend the ministry of the local Pastor in particular ways as outlined in this position description.
Position Summary: An ideal candidate will have had the experience of playing college volleyball or else four years of high school volleyball and 3-5 years of additional coaching experience. The coach must be a practicing Catholic who is strong in their faith and who is well-prepared for the responsibility of managing a team. Under the supervision of the Athletics Department, the Varsity Volleyball Coach is responsible for not just for planning and running competent practices that challenge girls to grow in their skills, but also for fostering a program-wide excitement for volleyball, a sense of belonging, and a love of the game. Most importantly of all, the coach is responsible for the spiritual formation of the young women entrusted to his/her care. Put shortly, the varsity coach sets the tone for the whole program and has a unique role to play in the evangelization and forming of women for Christ.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Heading up the volleyball program, coordinating expectations with junior varsity volleyball and middle school volleyball coaches.
- Attending all volleyball practices and games of the varsity team.
- Modeling virtuous sportsmanship.
- Forming students in virtue, especially humility and charity, in competing in athletic competitions.
- Charitably and honorably correcting students behavior during practices/games for the sake of their soul and the common good of the team.
- Serving as a role model and mentor to students.
- Working together with referees for the fair, just, and safe management of a contest emphasizing the Christian practice of forgiveness.
- Communicating consistently with the Athletics Director, Pastor, and Headmaster on how to form our students and teachers.
- Coordinating practices and games around SHA Jubilee Days.
- Maintaining facilities, equipment, and keeping academic and attendance records as required.
- Integrating Jesus Christ, the life of the Church and the organic unity of the Catholic faith into the athletic environment above all in the form of public prayer at every practice and athletic contest.
- Creating a team culture focused on the formation of women for Christ.
- Attending faculty and administrative meetings as directed.
Qualifications:
Required
- Either college volleyball experience or else 4 years of high school volleyball experience and 3-5 years of volleyball coaching experience.
- A demonstrable love for the game of volleyball.
- A practicing Catholic whose public life is lived in conformity with the moral teachings of the Church.
- A desire to evangelize and spiritually form students.
- Commitment to the Catholic mission of the Academy and willingness to sign the “Faculty Memorandum of Understanding” and swear the “Oath of Fidelity” to the Catholic faith.
- Strong personal discipline and the ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Ability to organize priorities.
- A high level of discretion and integrity.
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills and strong attention to detail communicated out to the team at the very least once per week.
