REPORTS TO: Director of Immigration Legal Services
HOURS & FLSA STATUS: 40 hours per week, non-exempt (9 hours M-Th, 4 hours Friday)
Immigration Legal Services (ILS) provides low-cost, legal representation in immigration matters to those in our community whose household income falls below 200% of the poverty line. Through legal representation, the staff of ILS helps its clients reunite with family living abroad; obtain U.S. citizenship; and obtain legal permanent resident status. ILS also assists immigrants who have been the victims of crimes. ILS manages more than 1,000 cases per year. The environment is different than a typical law firm as there are no billable hours to achieve and is mission-oriented. We offer excellent benefits including a retirement pension program.
BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Legal Assistant will be responsible for assisting attorneys manage a high immigration caseload, especially by serving as a point of contact between attorney and client, meeting with clients to collect information and documents, drafting required forms for filing, and tracking cases through until completion. The ideal candidate for this position is bilingual, has a strong work ethic, exceptional attention to detail, has strong problem-solving skills and outstanding customer service skills.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Assist attorneys in managing immigration cases, including but not limited to:
- Assisting in the preparation of immigration forms, applications and supporting documents and translations.
- Meeting with potential clients to confirm program eligibility, to collect documentation, or to collect additional information.
- Working with clients and local government agencies to obtain records
- Serving as point of contact between clients and attorney.
- Maintain accurate, complete and confidential files on all clients served.
- Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge of immigration law and procedure.
- Provide other administrative support to the Director of Immigration Legal Services and other attorneys, including providing back-up support for Legal Secretary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) REQUIRED
- Previous work with family-based/humanitarian-based immigration matters strongly preferred.
- Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize and work efficiently with minimal supervision. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other computer applications. Exceptional customer service skills.
- Strong attention to detail required.
