BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Sexton is responsible for the overall management and operation of the cemetery. This role involves coordinating burials, maintaining cemetery grounds, ensuring accurate recordkeeping, and assisting families during their time of need. The Sexton works closely with funeral homes, clergy, and the cemetery board to provide respectful and efficient services while maintaining the sacredness and order of the cemetery grounds.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

 Burial Coordination

  • Manage and schedule burial services, including ground preparation, interments, and the placement of headstones or markers.
  • Communicate with families, funeral homes, clergy, and cemetery staff to ensure smooth and timely burial processes.
  • Supervise or assist in the opening and closing of graves for burial services.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Oversee and participate in the regular maintenance of cemetery grounds, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, and repairing damaged areas.
  • Ensure pathways, plots, and communal areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
  • Address and resolve any issues related to cemetery upkeep, such as drainage or erosion.

Customer Service

  • Assist families with lot selection, burials, and plot purchases with care and sensitivity.
  • Guide families through cemetery rules, regulations, and the overall process of burial arrangements.
  • Respond to any inquiries or concerns from families or visitors in a compassionate and professional manner.

Recordkeeping and Administration

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of burials, plot ownership, and cemetery maps.
  • Manage plot sales and transfers, ensuring all documentation is properly filed and recorded.
  • Track and report cemetery expenses and budgets to cemetery administration or board members.

 Compliance and Regulations

  • Ensure all cemetery operations adhere to local, state, and federal laws governing burials and cemetery management.
  • Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations, including the handling of graves and human remains.
  • Manage the use and storage of cemetery equipment and materials.

 Other duties as assigned 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of cemetery operations, including burial procedures and groundskeeping.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, digging, and operating grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Experience with recordkeeping and basic administrative duties.
  • Compassionate and empathetic nature, with the ability to assist grieving families with sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with local and state cemetery regulations (preferred).
  • Ability to supervise staff or contractors when necessary.
  • Basic computer skills for recordkeeping purposes.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Catholic structure, function and institutions is helpful.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing and acceptable driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS

The work is completed at the cemetery in varying weather conditions.
