POSITION TITLE: OCIA Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Director of Family and Adult Faith Formation
FLSA STATUS: Hourly, Non-Exempt
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time
St. Francis de Sales Church, a vibrant multicultural parish in downtown Holland, Michigan is seeking a part-time OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation, formerly RCIA) coordinator who will welcome and encourage interested adult inquirers with a well-developed and responsive ministry of formation that leads to the sacraments of initiation into a full Catholic life. The OCIA Coordinator will also oversee the process of adult confirmation at the parish.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Model evangelization for parishioners through on-going inviting of new candidates and catechumens.
- Meet with and assess candidates’ needs:
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with candidates throughout the year to assess their individual spiritual and catechetical needs.
- Develop personalized plans where necessary to ensure they are properly supported.
- Plan the celebration of rites and coordinate with candidates and sponsors:
- Collaborate with liturgy and faith formation to ensure rites are scheduled as needed and coordinate with candidates and sponsors of the scheduled times and preparation to celebrate the scheduled rite
- Recruit and Train Catechists:
- Proactively identify, recruit, and train qualified catechists to provide engaging and thorough catechesis to adults preparing for the sacraments. This will include ongoing formation for current catechists and new volunteers as needed.
- Coordinate adult preparation classes in English and Spanish as required.
- Maintain necessary records.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Active and confirmed practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church and who leads an authentic, Catholic lifestyle and cultivates a strong prayer life and has a knowledge of Catholic Teaching (Catechism of the Catholic Church), Church documents, and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).
- Diocesan certification in Catechesis and a basic understanding of Catholic Beliefs, liturgy and Church sacramental Policies OR willingness to obtain diocesan certification in catechesis.
- Familiarity with technology including Microsoft Office, database management, and a willingness to learn technology are essential to the job.
- Valid Michigan’s Driver’s License.
- Completion of Safe Environment training, including authorization for criminal background check.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
- The ideal candidate has a cultural awareness of both the English and Spanish-speaking communities and has bilingual fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Flexibility: Availability for evening and weekend programs as needed.
- Physical Activity: Ability to lift materials (up to 25 pounds) and stay active during events.
